“It’ll be like B.B.’s Lawnside BBQ in Kansas City. You go there to eat BBQ and there just happens to be a bad-ass blues band over in the corner rocking out,” such was Josh Bowen’s vision for the new John Brown Smokehouse in Long Island City. La Esquina Del Camaron Mexicano, presided over by a gent who I’ve nicknamed Pedro El Cevichero, was hopping this Saturday. In Mexico the concoction he makes is called a cocktele. I scored a grande mixto—shrimp, octopus, and squid—for $11. He’s a mixologist of sorts. Watching him make a cocktele: seafood, olive oil, salt, clam juice, a squeeze of lime, a generous splash of his secret tomato-based elixir, cilantro, avocado, and onion is almost as much fun as eating it.
